The Rise of Hybrid Cars: Bridging the Gap Between Petrol and Electric

As the UK moves toward cleaner, greener transport, hybrids are becoming the go-to choice for drivers who want the best of both worlds: the familiarity of petrol and the eco-friendly benefits of electric.

According to data from YouGov Profiles, a significant portion of British consumers are considering hybrid vehicles for their next purchase. Among those planning to buy a car within the next 12 months, 42% express interest in a hybrid. This figure is particularly noteworthy given that while petrol cars (70%) continue to dominate the market, hybrids are a close second.

Why are hybrids so popular right now?

One of the biggest reasons people are choosing hybrids is to save money. In the face of volatile fuel prices, hybrid vehicles offer significant savings on running costs. The combination of electric and petrol power means less fuel consumption, particularly in urban environments where stop-start traffic allows for maximum use of the electric motor. Additionally, many hybrid vehicles fall into lower road tax bands, offering further savings for owners.

They also produce fewer emissions, making them a great option for drivers who want to do their bit for the planet without going fully electric just yet. Plus, they’re not affected by cold weather like some electric cars, making them a reliable choice all year round.

Unlike fully electric vehicles, many hybrids don’t need to be plugged in. They charge their batteries as you drive, so you never have to worry about finding a charging point or running out of power on a long journey.

With new rules phasing out petrol and diesel cars by 2030, and hybrids allowed until 2035 (including vans with internal combustion engines), choosing a hybrid is a smart way to stay ahead of changing regulations and avoid future restrictions.

What about the practical side?

One can fill up a hybrid just like a regular car, but unlike a regular car, you won’t need to visit the petrol station as often. There’s no need to worry about charging cables or home charging points either.

As more hybrids hit the market, prices are coming down. Used hybrids are now some of the fastest-selling cars in the UK, making them a budget-friendly choice for many drivers.

Hybrids often have lower insurance costs and, thanks to their efficient engines, can be cheaper to maintain in the long run.

Is a hybrid right for your customer?

If your customer wants to cut fuel costs, reduce their carbon footprint, and avoid the hassle of charging, a hybrid could be the perfect fit. They’re a practical stepping stone for anyone who isn’t quite ready to go fully electric but wants to future-proof their driving.

With more choice than ever and government support keeping hybrids on sale until 2035, now is a great time for your customers to consider making the switch. Hybrids are helping bridge the gap between petrol and electric-offering savings, convenience, and a greener way to drive.
