The Next Generation of VAP: What Will Protection Look Like in Five Years?

The role of vehicle protection products has changed significantly over recent years. Once viewed primarily as optional extras offered at the point of sale, the future of VAP is moving towards something much broader: helping customers manage ownership risks throughout the entire vehicle journey.

As technology, customer expectations and ownership models continue to evolve, protection products will need to evolve with them. The next generation of VAP will not simply be about protecting vehicles. It will be about protecting confidence.

From Products to Ownership Solutions

Historically, many protection products were positioned around specific risks such as mechanical failure, cosmetic damage or vehicle write-off. While these remain important, customer expectations are changing.

Today's motorists are looking for greater reassurance around the overall ownership experience. They want confidence that unexpected costs can be managed and that support is available when they need it. This means successful protection products will increasingly be positioned as ownership solutions rather than standalone products.

The Impact of Changing Vehicle Technology

The automotive market is changing rapidly. The growth of electric vehicles, more complex vehicle technology and new ownership models are creating new customer concerns.

For example, EV buyers will have questions around battery technology, repair costs and long-term ownership. Vehicles with more advanced technology may also create concerns around the cost and difficulty of certain repairs.

According to the SMMT, battery electric vehicle transactions in the UK used car market increased by 32% year-on-year to 86,943 units in Q1 2026, while electrified vehicles accounted for 11.7% of all used car transactions, which is a record market share.

As vehicles become more sophisticated, the need for clear explanations and appropriate protection solutions has never been more important.

Personalisation Will Define the Future of VAP

The next stage of protection products is likely to be defined by personalisation, because not all customers have the same concerns.

A family relying on one vehicle for daily travel may value reliability and unexpected repair protection. A customer purchasing an EV may have different priorities. Someone financing a higher-value vehicle may be more focused on protecting their financial position. Future protection solutions will need to reflect these differences.

Data and technology will play a key role in helping retailers understand customer needs and provide more relevant recommendations. The future of VAP will not be about offering every customer the same package. It will be about offering the right support for the individual customer.

What Will VAP Look Like in Five Years?

The future of VAP will likely be more connected, personalised and integrated into the ownership experience. Protection may become less about a single moment at vehicle purchase and more about ongoing support throughout ownership.

Technology could enable more personalised recommendations, better customer communication and solutions that adapt as customer needs change. However, one thing is unlikely to change, is that customers will continue to value confidence.

Buying a vehicle is a significant financial commitment, and uncertainty will always be part of ownership. The role of protection products is to help customers manage that uncertainty. The next generation of VAP will not be defined by selling more products, it will be defined by creating better ownership experiences.

For dealers, manufacturers and protection providers, the future belongs to products that solve real customer problems, build trust and provide genuine peace of mind.
