With winter approaching, it's crucial for car dealerships and their customers to prepare for the challenges that colder weather brings. Here are some essential tips to ensure vehicles are winter-ready, promoting safety and reliability on the roads.

1. Schedule a winter check-up

Encourage your customers to book a winter service for their vehicles. Many garages offer free or discounted winter checks, which include inspections of the battery, tyres, lights, and fluid levels. This proactive step can prevent breakdowns caused by cold weather strains on the vehicle.

2. Inspect tyres

Tyres are critical for safe driving in winter conditions. Advise your customers to check the tread depth, ensuring it is at least 3mm for optimal grip on icy or wet roads. Also remind them to maintain correct tyre pressure, which should be slightly higher than in summer.  Additionally, recommending winter tyres for areas with heavy snowfall can enhance safety.

3. Battery maintenance

Cold weather can significantly impact battery performance. Suggest that your customers test their battery's condition and replace it if it shows signs of weakness, especially in vehicles over three years old.  Regular checks for corrosion and ensuring connections are clean can prevent many issues related to battery failure. A portable jump-start pack can also be a lifesaver during unexpected failures.

4. Clean vehicles regularly

Road salt and grime can cause corrosion if not cleaned off regularly during winter months. Don’t forget to remind your customers about the importance of washing their cars frequently throughout the winter season to prevent long-term damage. Many dealerships find products such as paint protection can be useful in preventing any long-term damage caused by salt and winter grime.

5. Windscreen wipers and fluid

Visibility is paramount during winter months and worn or damaged wiper blades can severely impair visibility during winter storms. Remind your customers to replace worn wiper blades and educate them that it’s essential to replace wiper blades with winter-specific versions that handle snow and ice better.  They should also make sure that the windshield washer fluid is suitable for low temperatures, ensuring they regularly check and top up their screen wash to avoid freezing issues.

6. Engine oil and other fluids

Cold temperatures can thicken engine oil and other fluids, making it difficult for vehicles to start or operate efficiently. Advise your customers on switching to winter-grade oils and regularly checking all fluid levels, including transmission and power steering fluids.

7. Plan journeys wisely

Before setting off, it's wise to check the weather forecast and allow extra time for travel. Customers should clear all windows of ice or snow before driving and avoid ungritted roads if possible during severe weather conditions.

By following these tips, your car dealership can help your customers stay safe during the winter months. Promoting regular maintenance and preparedness not only enhances customer satisfaction but also fosters long-term relationships built on trust and reliability in vehicle safety.
