London’s ULEZ Expansion – What Does It Mean for Car Dealers?

Date: Thu 6th July 2023   |   Author: Modeten

The upcoming expansion of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in London will have significant implications for car dealerships in the city. Dealers operating both inside and outside of the extended zone should be aware that the value of a compliant vehicle could make marketing it into areas where fees will apply attractive. There are other considerations and opportunities to be considered, here are a few key points to be aware of ahead of the 29th August launch:

1. Inventory Shift

Dealerships may need to adjust their inventory in response to increased demand for compliant vehicles. More customers will be looking for cars that meet the stricter ULEZ emission standards, which include Euro 4, 5, and 6 for petrol vehicles (roughly 2006 models onwards), and Euro 6 for diesel vehicles (roughly end of 2015 models onwards). Demand for fully electric and hybrid vehicles is also expected to rise.

Detailed information around the requirements for various Clean Air Zones across the UK are available in our latest Clear Air Zone blog.

2. Value of Compliant Vehicles

The value of ULEZ-compliant vehicles is likely to increase due to higher demand. Conversely, the value of non-compliant vehicles could drop as they will incur a daily charge to drive in the expanded ULEZ area. Dealerships should be mindful of this when pricing their vehicles and consider the financial impact on their business.

3. Increased Awareness and Education

Sales teams should be well-informed about the expansion and the relevant emission standards, so they can provide accurate information to customers. This might involve additional training or education efforts. Dealerships can also provide a valuable service by helping customers check if a vehicle is ULEZ-compliant, using tools such as the ULEZ vehicle checker on the Transport for London (TFL) website.

4. Opportunities for Growth

As ever, there will be business opportunities for those who are able to respond quickly to new market conditions. Adaptations to sales operations could include promotion of electric or hybrid vehicles, trade-in deals for non-compliant vehicles, or expanding peripheral services to include retrofitting vehicles to meet emission standards.

In summary, the upcoming ULEZ expansion will require adaptation and strategic planning from dealerships inside and outside of London, but it also presents opportunities for growth and innovation in the face of changing consumer demands and environmental regulations.
