Extended warranties: Current trends and developments

Longer warranties, bundled warranties and better warranties. These are all trends in 2024 that car dealerships are seeing when analysing the extended warranty market as the year progresses.

The extended car warranty market is dynamic and influenced by various external factors.  Technological advancements, consumer preferences, regulatory changes and economic conditions play a vital role in shaping the current market landscape.  Understanding these dynamics is crucial for car dealerships to stay competitive and adapt to changing market conditions.

Consumer interest in extended warranties is increasing in the current climate, and feedback from the dealer network is that drivers are becoming much more diligent in their buying processes and more risk-averse to unforeseen exposure to costs.

According to Joff Suter, Director of AutoProtect Group’s Core Division:

“We have certainly seen substantial growth in warranty performance in Q1 and foresee that continuing well into the remaining months of the year.  Consumers are keen to future proof their purchase and protect themselves from unexpected repairs; and dealers are well positioned to help them do that.”

Data has shown that demand for warranty products increases during times of financial uncertainty and many drivers are spending more time considering and planning for the impact of unexpected costs.

Suter goes on to mention:

“According to the Motor Ombudsman, 53% of businesses witnessed consumers avoiding bringing in their cars for even routine servicing last year to reduce their spending so the appetite for warranty is clear”

Extended warranties are aftermarket products that can extend the coverage beyond the standard period, offering additional peace of mind but at an extra cost. The specifics of these warranties, including their length and what they cover, can vary widely depending on the provider and the policy selected.

The extended warranty market has witnessed substantial growth due to several factors.  The increasing complexity of vehicle systems and components, coupled with rising repair costs (as vehicles get older), has created a strong demand for extended warranties.  Vehicle owners are seeking comprehensive protection against unforeseen mechanical and electrical failures, which has led to a surge in the adoption of extended warranties.

There’s a lot to be said for the convenience of purchasing an extended warranty directly from a dealership. The customer doesn’t have to go through the process of evaluating various vehicle warranty providers, and they also get peace of mind knowing that their car will receive expert care from an authorised service centre in the event of a covered mechanical breakdown.

To maintain their competitive advantage, key dealerships vying for market share are focusing on offering innovative warranty plans, expanding their distribution channels, and enhancing customer experiences.

Suter adds that his team of account managers in the UK enables AutoProtect to operate as an extension of our dealers’ business.

“Often, our support focuses on giving dealers an understanding of the benefits of longer-term warranties to give them the confidence to introduce consumers to longer-term products. For dealers who don’t have the time, or simply don’t want to offer a warranty at point of sale, our DigitalPlus product supports dealers in still being able to make sales through digital and contact centre options.  Renewals are available through these channels, too”.

A few other significant trends to note include a shift to subscriptions, improved coverage, and increased durations.  In addition, there’s been an increase in sales of other protection products such as tyre and alloy cover.

The extended car warranty market is poised for growth in the coming years as further integration of advanced technologies, customisation of warranty plans and improved customer experiences through digitalisation drives customer demand.
