In September 2025, the UK car market saw a massive surge in registrations from Chinese manufacturers, led by BYD’s extraordinary growth. BYD alone experienced a staggering 880% increase in new car registrations compared to September 2024, selling over 11,000 vehicles. This remarkable growth has made the UK BYD’s largest international market outside China and positioned BYD as one of the UK’s fastest-growing car brands.

Overall, the new car market rose 13.7% to reach 312,891 units, the best September performance since 2020, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders.

The BYD brand has overtaken established legacy manufacturers such as Renault and SEAT in UK sales, signalling a major shift in buyer preferences towards Chinese electric and hybrid vehicles.  Not surprisingly, the UK has become the company’s largest international market outside of China for the first time.

What this means for the market

  • The surge in Chinese EV sales reflects a broader trend of increased electric vehicle adoption in the UK, driven by consumer demand for value-packed zero-emission cars.
  • BYD’s success highlights growing trust and acceptance of Chinese automotive technology among British drivers.
  • This growth provides dealerships with an exciting opportunity to offer customers a new range of compelling EV choices that combine affordability, range, and advanced features.
  • BYD’s popular models like the Seal U DM-i plug-in hybrid SUV and the fully electric Sealion 7 have struck a chord with UK consumers seeking affordable, practical, and tech-savvy vehicles - the Seal U DM-i is the UK’s best-selling plug-in hybrid year-to-date.
  • BYD’s competitive pricing, helped by zero tariffs on imports and widespread retail expansion with over 100 outlets nationwide, has made its vehicles highly accessible.

BYD’s market share rose to 3.6% in September, up from 2.2% year-to-date.  Additionally, BYD recently announced yet another significant milestone in the UK with the opening of a dedicated Battery Service Centre in Milton Keynes. The state-of-the-art facility will initially focus on electric bus batteries; with over 2,450 BYD buses already in operation nationwide, including 84% of the electric buses in service in London. This new centre will enhance aftersales services and support BYD’s customers across the UK.

BYD’s incredible UK sales growth in 2025 is shaking up the electric vehicle market. Offering a compelling alternative to traditional brands such as Tesla with lower prices, a range of models, and rapid expansion, BYD is making EV ownership more accessible than ever. British drivers looking for affordable, reliable, and tech-savvy electric cars now have a strong new option, one that’s capturing hearts and roads alike.

With BYD’s continued momentum, customers are eager for affordable, innovative electric and hybrid vehicles, making this the moment to showcase these options in showrooms and marketing.  The rise of BYD and Chinese EV manufacturers marks an exciting new chapter in the UK automotive landscape, full of opportunities for dealerships ready to embrace it.
