Building Lasting Customer Relationships After Handover

The customer journey doesn’t end when the keys are handed over. In many cases, that’s where the long-term relationship begins. For dealerships, delivering a positive buying experience is essential. But the way customers are supported after they drive away can also influence how they view the business, whether they return and what they tell others about their experience.
With so much attention focused on securing the sale, it’s about dealerships making sure they continue adding value throughout vehicle ownership.
Build trust before the customer leaves the showroom
A strong ownership experience starts with clear, honest conversations. Customers need to understand what they are buying, what their ongoing responsibilities may be and where they can turn for support. This includes explaining relevant protection options in a way that is easy to understand, without overwhelming customers with information or creating unnecessary pressure.
Research published by YouGov in December 2025 found that knowledgeable staff and a lack of sales pressure were among the leading factors shaping positive showroom experiences. For dealerships, this strengthens the importance of listening to customers, understanding their priorities and helping them make informed decisions.
Protection products may form part of that conversation, but the focus should always be on whether an option meets the customer's needs and whether its benefits, limitations and terms are clearly explained.
Support shouldn’t stop at handover
Once a customer leaves the showroom, thoughtful communication can help maintain the relationship. Providing relevant information at useful moments, making support routes easy to find and ensuring customers know where to turn if they have a question about a product they purchased all goes a long way towards this.
This is particularly important for protection products, where customers may not need support until months or years after purchasing their vehicle.
The FCA Consumer Duty guidance emphasises consumer understanding and support throughout the customer relationship. Clear explanations at the point of sale and accessible support afterwards are therefore important considerations for firms subject to the Duty.
Turn aftersales into an opportunity
Listening to feedback can also help identify where the experience is working well and where improvements may be needed. Reviewing customer comments, recurring queries and common points of confusion can provide useful insights for training and process improvements.
Over time, these small interactions can help create a more consistent experience and give customers reasons to return.
Think beyond the handover
Building lasting customer relationships doesn’t require a complicated strategy. It starts with clear communication; relevant support and a genuine understanding of what customers need. A positive handover matters, but the support customers remember afterwards can matter just as much.
